Guangzhou to Host Int'l Ophthalmology Conference

The 12th Conference of the Afro- Asian Council of Ophthalmology will be hosted from November 11 through 15 in this capital of south China's Guangdong Province. The theme of the conference is "Everyone Will Be Able To See in 2020".

Nearly 1,000 ophthalmologists, experts and scholars from over 20 countries and regions worldwide are expected to attend the conference and discuss ophthalmologic research in the 21st century. At the same time, experts will host a series of symposia on 24 fields of ophthalmology including prevention of blindness, corneal diseases, glaucoma, cataract and eye trauma.

The Afro-Asian Council of Ophthalmology, which was set up in 1958 with headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, is the most prestigious organization in the field of ophthalmology in Afro-Asian region. The Council hosts a regular academic conference every four years. It is the first time the council will host a conference in China.

There are 40 to 50 million blind people in the world, of whom 18 percent are Chinese.
