Tibet Downsizes Regional Government And Staff

Tibet Autonomous Region has started to significantly reduce its staff of regional government employees as part of the national effort to downsize local governments.

Sources from the regional government said that the number of regional government departments in Tibet will drop from the current 29 to 23, and their staff will be cut by 25 percent, from 2,618 to 1,963 employees.

A 15-percent cutback will be seen in the public security, judicial, safety and prison administrations, taking the former total of 927 down to 788.

The sources said that the downsizing involves separating the functions of government from enterprise management, simplifying the procedures of administrative examination and approval, and strengthening administrating according to law.
