China to Strengthen Anti-Drug Education Among LawbreakersThe Chinese government will take resolute measures to strengthen the anti-drug education among lawbreakers, Deng Ming, an official with China's National Narcotics Control Commission said Wednesday.The lawbreakers, confined in such places as prisons, lock-ups, detention houses, reform-through-labor institutions, and study- through-labor institutions, are considered the most likely to become drug users. Because of the high drug abuse rate among the population in these places, it is of vital importance to strengthen anti-drug education, and this should be a key part of the nationwide anti-drug campaign, Deng added. Drug abuse has become an increasingly serious problem in China in recent years, and by the end of 1999 there were 680,000 registered drug users in the country, up 14.3 percent compared with the 1998 figure. Deng also said the National Narcotics Control Commission recently sent photos, video tapes, and VCDs on drug control to all the grassroots units to facilitate this education program. |
