Fight against Flood, Drought Arduous Task

Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday that the fight against floods and droughts is a long-term and arduous task which can never be neglected.

Speaking at a national conference on flood and drought control, Wen urged local governments to lose no time in repairing damaged water conservancy infrastructure facilities, and come up with plans to deal with possible floods. He also insisted that quality construction is imperative in these efforts.

Wen, who heads the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, warned of faulty reservoirs and dams which may be vulnerable to heavy rains during this summer's flood season. He also demanded that officials in drought-stricken areas find more water resources and popularize water-saving techniques for agriculture to secure the grain harvest.

Since the beginning of Spring, regions north of the Yangtze River have been seriously affected by drought due to little precipitation and excessively windy days.

Wen, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, urged Party members, government officials, soldiers, experts, as well as common people to work together to counter floods and drought.
