The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Australia have agreed to enhance cooperation in the environment, Hong Kong's Acting Secretary for the Environment and Food Paul Tang and visiting Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage Robert Hill jointly announced Thursday.

Other possible areas of collaboration interest include sustainable development, waste recovery and reduction and wastewater treatment, they said.

Hill is visiting Hong Kong with a delegation of Australian environmental specialists, at the invitation of Hong Kong's Chief Secretary Anson Chan, to seek potential partnership with Hong Kong in the environment.

The Australian minister believed the prospests for environmental cooperation between Australia and Hong Kong are bright since the Hong Kong government is committed to tackle environmental problems and Australia has expertise in the field.

Also on Thursday, the Australian delegation hosted a seminar at the Australian Consulate General to brief their Hong Kong counterparts about Australia's environmental expertise, including solid and liquid water management, natural gas fuel systems and urban planning and design.

The delegation will visit a number of local sites and meet with various Hong Kong government departments.
