South China Island Province Reports High Economic GrowthThe island province of Hainan has scored 10.27 billion yuan (about US$1.24 billion) in the first quarter of this year, up 8.1 percent from the same period last year.According to local sources, the economic growth is 0.5 percentage points more than that in the first quarter of last year. Agriculture comes the first in terms of the role in supporting the local economy, service trade the second and the last industry, said the sources. The province accomplished 4.04 billion yuan in agricultural added value from January to March, up 11.6 percent from 1999 according to comparable figure, and completed 1.15 billion yuan in industrial added value, up 15.2 percent. In the first three months, Hainan hosted more than 2.4 million tourists and earned about 1.9 billion yuan, up 12.8 percent, while retail sales climbed to 4.29 billion yuan, up 7.9 percent. A leading local official said that greater efforts should continue to be made to improve economic returns of local industrial enterprises and accelerate development of the service industry.
