Shenzhen to Build Six New Container Berths

Shenzhen, one of China's earliest special economic zones, will build six more container berths in the next five years.

According to an official with the city's development planning bureau, Shenzhen plans to build four 50,000-dwt (dead weight tonnage) container berths at the city's Yantian Harbor with an total investment of about four billion yuan (about US$500 million).

The city will also invest 1.7 billion yuan to build two new container berths at Santudi of Shekou Harbor. On completion, the two berths will be capable of handling 500,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) of containers annually.

The construction of berths at the two places have been submitted to the State Development Planning Commission for approval, said the official.

Shenzhen now has eight container berths in operation, and the city expects to handle four million TEUs of containers this year, comparing 2.98 million TEUs of containers in 1999.
