China's Effort in Protecting Intellectual Property Praised
China has made marked progress in protecting intellectual property rights. An U.S. official praised the Chinese government in the border city of Ruili in southwest China's Yunnan Province Tuesday.
Sam Ho, a representative to the Asia-Pacific region in the Motion Picture Association of America, made the remark while 250, 000 compact discs smuggled into Yunnan from neighboring Myanmar were being destroyed in Ruili in the presence of officials from China's Press and Publication Administration, the State Copyright Bureau and the General Administration of Customs, and representatives of international organizations.
"The anti-pirating effort in a small border city shows the Chinese government's determination in protecting intellectual property rights," the official said.
The U.S. association, which includes such members as Century- Fox Corp., Walt Disney Productions, Warner Brothers Pictures Inc. and Metro-Goldwin-Mayer, has been cooperating with governments worldwide to protect intellectual property rights.
Statistics reveal that China has seized 22 million pirated VCDs and 900,000 DVDs this year.
