Yunnan Destroys 250,000 Smuggled Fake VCDs

At noontime of May 16, over 250,000 copies of 72 types of smuggled Fake VCDs were publicly destroyed in Ruili, a border city in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

This is an important and concerted action taken by the working group of the China "cracking down on porn and counterfeit products and publications", the State Copyright Administration, the State Press and Publication Administration, the General Administration of Customs, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the Ministry of Culture, as well as the Yunnan provincial government and parties concerned, It is also the largest campaign launched by the province to crack down on pirated products and VCDs.

It is reported that these fake VCDs were seized by the Kunming Customs House in Ruili last September 5 and a transnational gang composed of seven suspects engaged in the production, supply and sales of such products was captured at the same time.

According to Gui Xiaofeng, deputy director of the State Press and Publication Administration, smuggled fake publications and pirated VCDs have been severely attacked in China in recent years.

However, due to the lure of exorbitant profits, there has appeared a trend of moving the production base of pirated VCDs from some coastal areas to the border areas in southwest China or abroad, and smuggling from abroad has become the main source of pirated publications and VCDs. Under this situation, the action of destroying smuggled fake VCDs clearly shows to the world the determination and ability of the Chinese Government to rejuvenate China through science and technology, to protect intellectual property rights and to deal a heavy blow at smuggled piratical and illegal publications and VCDs.
