No Way Out for "Lee Teng-hui Path"
Xinhua news agency released a commentary Wednesday, stressing that there will be no way out for the so-called "Lee Teng-hui path" in the island of Taiwan.
The commentary says that it has aroused the attention of the general public whether the new leaders of Taiwan accept the one China principle and dispel people's doubts or they inherit Lee's mantle and prolong the "Lee Teng-hui path."
The so-called path of Lee Teng-hui means that Lee has suppressed forces on the island that are in favor of reunification while fostering separatist forces and separatist thinking.
On the cross-Straits relations, Lee deviated step by step from the one China principle, deterred and undermined the growth of cross-Straits ties and created regional tension.
In the meantime, Lee engaged himself in a host of activities to actively promote "two Chinas", "one China, one Taiwan" to the rest of the world and tried all means to purchase advanced weapons in an attempt to confront the motherland.
In a nutshell, the so-called "Lee Teng-hui path" represents a separatist path that continuously betrayed and negated the one China principle, the commentary says.
When he first took office, Lee often talked about "one China" so as to consolidate his new power in Taiwan.
In his first meeting with the press in February 1988 after taking office, Lee vowed that there was only the policy of one China instead of the policy of two Chinas. There is only one China and the two sides of the Taiwan Straits must reunite, he said.
Later, in October 1990, Lee once again said publicly that there was only one China, which should and must reunite, and that every Chinese should be responsible for reuniting the country.
However, Lee's true face began to be exposed with the gradual consolidation of his power. He started to negate the one China principle and uttered one after another separatist remarks such as the "one country, two governments", "parallel political entities" and the infamous "two states" remarks.
Lee went even further to suggest a coordinated attack on China with foreign forces, straining even further cross-Straits relations.
The commentary stresses that the basis and prerequisite for stabilizing and developing cross-Straits relations lies in recognizing the fact that there is one China, Taiwan is a part of China and China's sovereignty and territorial integrity can not be split.
Any Chinese with intuitive knowledge will not waiver on such an important issue, and any word or deed that deviates from and negate the one China principle will not be accepted or tolerated by the Chinese people, the commentary says.
The "two states" remarks of Lee were later spurned by the Chinese at home and abroad and Lee himself was deemed by the international community as "the troublemaker".
In the island, Lee's perverse acts have aroused the great indignation of the Taiwan people, and he was forced to step down much earlier from the post of chairman of the Kuomintang.
The commentary notes that when Lee first put forward his remarks of "two states", some people already pointed out that his move was designed to influence the island's post-election mainland policy so that his path would remain even when he was gone.
Actually, the specter of Lee's path still looms large in Taiwan. Some Taiwan independent advocates are trying to avoid being clear on the one China principle. Others are attempting to drag foreign forces into the internal affairs of China.
The commentary says that during his dictatorship of Taiwan, Lee had given full play to his self-made role as a sinister politician and hypocrite. His gestures concerning the one China principle were made only to conform to specific situations.
Today, some people in Taiwan are talking about easing cross- Straits relations and improving relations with the motherland, but only for the purpose of consolidating their political power in the island, the commentary says.
It points out that the key to improved cross-Straits relations lies in the upholding of the one China policy. "It does not mean much to utter only a few kind words while refusing to recognize the one China principle and Taiwan as part of China," it says.
During his rule, Lee Teng-hui tried all he could to promote to the international community "two Chinas", "one China, one Taiwan". However, Lee failed. Though he wanted to prevent the cross-Straits relations from developing, Lee received no support from the people of Taiwan.
The commentary notes that the so-called "Lee Teng-hui path" has already been proved to be a dead end.
If some people still hope to continuously push forward Lee's path in Taiwan, they are destined to come to a more disgraceful end.
