President Jiang Interviewed by US "Science"


Jiang receives interview from "Science"
President Jiang Zemin said Wednesday that Chinese scientists will spare no effort to make more contributions to the development of science and technology in the world as well as to the progress of mankind.

The Chinese government will also encourage its scientists to conduct international exchanges and cooperation at various levels and in different fields, he said during an interview with Ellis Rubinstein, chief editor of the U.S.-based magazine "Science".

He said that China needs international cooperation in developing science and technology, and the world also needs China in this regard.

Jiang expressed his confidence in China's education reform, saying that China's educational reform will push forward the quality education and improve the combination of education and science and technology.

He cited basic research as the driving force of human civilization and the development of science and economy, saying that the Chinese government has adopted a series of measures to support basic research.

On the request of the magazine, Jiang wrote an editorial on the development of science in China.

"Science" is an internationally recognized magazine on science and technology.
