Philippine President Calls for Closer Business Ties

Visiting Philippine President Joseph Estrada called on Philippine and Chinese businessmen to make new contributions to the development of bilateral economic cooperation and trade.

He voiced his hope when he spoke to a forum on the business ties between China and the Philippines, which was sponsored by the China Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of the Philippines.

Estrada said that the Philippines and China are friendly neighboring countries which have enjoyed a long history of friendship.

Since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1975, fruitful results have been scored in the bilateral relations in numerous fields, he said.

A week-long celebration will be held from June 5-11 in the Philippines to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic ties, he added.

Yu Xiaosong, chairman of CCPIT said that with the full support of the governments of the two countries, entrepreneurs of both sides should join hands to turn over a new chapter in bilateral economic cooperation in the new century.

A total of 300 businesspeople from both countries participated in the forum. They discussed matters concerning cooperation in the field of light industry, transportation, telecommunications, energy, science and technology, as well as agriculture.
