Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Ruihuan arrived Trinidad And Tobago Tuesday afternoon for a three-day friendly official visit to Trinidad and Tobago, praising the island country for developing its economy fast.

This is the first time for a CPPCC chairman to visit this Caribbean island country, and also the third leg of Li's ongoing four-country trip to the Americas.

In a written speech he delivered at the airport, Li said that the talented and diligent Trinidad and Tobago people have scored remarkable achievement in their resolute efforts in development. As an important country in the Caribbean region, Trinidad and Tobago is playing an increasingly important role in regional and international affairs and has made major contribution to regional stability and development, Li said.

The CPPCC National Committee chairman added that although geographically far apart, the friendly exchanges of the two peoples date back to two centuries ago.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 26 years ago, Li said, the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries have been constantly developing and growing in strength. He reaffirmed that the Chinese government attaches importance to the development of its friendly relations and cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago and cherishes highly the traditional friendship.

It conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples to increase exchanges, improve mutual understanding, enhance friendship, expand cooperation and further consolidate and develop the existing friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries, Li concluded.

The Chinese leader and his entourage were welcomed at the airport by Foreign Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Ralph Maraj and other senior officials, as well as Chinese ambassador to this country Zhang Songxian and local overseas Chinese.

Before Trinidad and Tobago, Li and his party have visited Canada and Venezuela and they will also go to Peru for an official visit after touring this island country.
