Spokeswoman: US not Needed for Taiwan Mediation

China does not need the United States or any other nation to mediate the Taiwan question, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue also directed a warning to Taiwan's new leader, Chen Shui-bian, telling him that he should acknowledge that Taiwan is an integral part of China.

"The Taiwan question is China's internal affair,'' Zhang said. The Chinese people can solve their own problems, she added.

"The outside world has no right to interfere in China's internal affairs,'' Zhang asserted.

Zhang said the United States should uphold its commitment in recognizing "one China'' and should not do anything to harm relations across the Taiwan Straits.

"There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is a part of China,'' Zhang said. "This is an historical fact and also a reality recognized by the international community.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of China brooks no separation nor does it leave any room for negotiation.''

Zhang said she believes that leaders on Taiwan know very clearly how they can express their support for the one-China principle.

On the Dalai Lama's upcoming visit to Denmark, Zhang said: "The Dalai Lama has for a long time engaged in activities to split the motherland and preached independence for Tibet.

"We are opposed to the meeting with the Dalai Lama and any invitation by any official from any country or region under any name or under any pretext.''

Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen is scheduled to meet with the Dalai Lama at Copenhagen's airport on Sunday.

Zhang said China hopes the Danish side will "prudently and properly handle'' this issue so that it will not affect the development of friendly relations between China and Denmark.
