HK Boosts Learning of English

About 5,000 employees have been approved for workplace English funding, said the Steering Committee on the Workplace English Campaign of Hong Kong Tuesday.

The funding scheme, as part of the year-long campaign launched on February 28, provides subsidies to meet half of employees' training costs and examination fees in learning English, up to a maximum value of 1,500 HK dollars (192.3 U.S. dollars) per employee.

Grants will be given to applicants in the form of reimbursement after they have completed a training course and attained the relevant English-language benchmarks in international tests. The campaign, for which 50 million HK dollars (6.4 million U.S. dollars) has been set aside, also includes activities like the " One Minute's English" program running on television and radio stations, a 10-episode program series on workplace English produced by TVB and a Commercial Radio program which will have its hosts travelling around Hong Kong to find the best English- speaking taxi-drivers in town.
