Milk Drinking Advocated in ChinaA representative of China's dairy industry has urged countrymen to increase the consumption of milk products for the sake of health.Wang Huaibao, director-general of the council of the China Dairy Industry Association (CDIA), said the drinking of more milk by youngsters is vital to the improvement of overall health conditions of the Chinese people. "Milk and Health of Young People" is the theme of today's International Milk Day, which was launched by an international federation of dairy industry in Germany in 1961, according to a " Beijing Youth Daily" report. But the annual event drew attention from Chinese only from last year when ministries of health and agriculture reached an agreement on developing the dairy industry while promoting milk consumption. At present, Chinese people still drink less milk than alcohol. A CDIA report last year revealed that eight million tons of spirits is produced in the country each year, compared with 7.4 million tons of milk. On average Chinese consumes six kilograms of dairy products a year, compared with 92.2 kg of the world's average, said Jiang Jianping, vice chairman of the National Committee of Food and Nutrition Counselings. About half of the country's milk output is consumed by people in big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, said the CDIA report.
