HK Chief Extends Appointment of Secretary for Justice

HK Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa Tuesday said that he had invited Miss Elise Leung to stay on as the Secretary for Justice for another two years until June 2002.

Tung said that following the reunification, the successful implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems' and our ability to maintain the rule of law are being recognized both in Hong Kong and overseas.

Indeed, he said, under the new constitutional framework, to maintain the rule of law in Hong Kong and to implement 'One Country, Two Systems', the job of the Secretary for Justice is a highly sensitive and challenging one.

"As my principal legal adviser, the Secretary for Justice has provided very important legal advice on a wide range of issues, in particular in connection with the Basic Law and the relationship between the Mainland legal system and the Hong Kong legal system," Tung said.

Tung added that the Secretary for Justice has provided excellent leadership in guiding the Department of Justice to firmly protect the rule of law in Hong Kong.

In both respects, the Secretary for Justice has performed very well. "My colleagues and I, and Members of the Executive Council, are delighted that the Secretary for Justice can continue to serve Hong Kong together with us in the days and years ahead, Tung said. The current appointment of the Secretary for Justice expires on June 30, 2000.

Miss Elise Leung also told a media session Tuesday that she was honored by the invitation of the Chief Executive for her to stay on as the Secretary for Justice for another two years until June 2002.

"As a person born and brought up in Hong Kong, I feel the obligation to serve the community," Leung said. "So when Tung asked me to stay on for another two more years, I am pleased to accept."

"I would like to thank members of the Executive and Legislative Councils and the administration, particularly my colleagues of the Department of Justice and the public, for their encouragement and support during the past three years, and I believe I can count on them for their continued support," Leung said.
