Information Products, a New Growth Point in Foreign Trade

Under the guidance of the policy of promoting trade by way of technology, China's electronic and information products had seen a fast growth in exports, hitting USD 39 billion by 1999, a rise by 52.6% as compared to the same period of last year. The electronic and information products have come to be the new growth point for China's export.

From 1991 to 1999, the export of suchlike registered an annual growth rate averaging at 31.6%. The export in 1999 reached 39 billion in US dollars, a rise of 45%. The ratio of electronic and information products to the total export has reached 20.1%. The export of computer, software, integrated circuit and communication equipment hit 10.81 billion dollars in the first quarter and expected to reach 45 by the end of the year.

Some problems, however, exist. The technological reserve of China's information manufacturing industry is relatively insufficient, innovation ability is weak and the overall competitiveness in high-tech products is fragile too, and the information technology and network service for foreign trade export falls short of the need.
