Crowning Success Achieved in China's Water Conservancy ConstructionA new round of water conservancy construction drive has been completed in China. Statistics show that great achievements have been made in raising the country's abilities for flood control, fighting drought, developing water-saving irrigation, ecological environment protection, and building small-scale irrigation works.News from the Ministry of Water Resources say that from last winter to spring this year a total of 8.85 billion labor force had taken part in the construction work, with a fund of 53.1 billion yuan used. The irrigated areas newly expanded total 18.02 million mu, with 65.18 million mu of land having been improved in irrigation. Besides, The areas put under control from waterlogging have increased by 16.99 million mu, along with medium/low yield farmlands up to 32.890 million mu having been built. Total earth and stone work completed amount to as much as 11.3 billion cubic meters. Flood-control construction work has been doing well in China, according to authoritative sources released. Up to now, 37,600 km of dykes and dams have been reinforced, 75,000 km of waterways dredged, for a 150 percent and 174 percent higher than originally planned. Most water conservancy projects destroyed by last year's flood have been repaired, especially in Hunan and Hubei provinces, a more seriously affected area, where 88 percent and 99 percent of damaged projects have rebuilt or further reinforced. |
