Nation Backs Shanghai's Bid for World Expo 2010

State Councilor Wu Yi said in Shanghai Monday that the Chinese government gives full support to Shanghai's bid to host World Expo 2010.

"This decision by the central Government is both responsible and serious," she said at a briefing on Shanghai's bid for the exposition, sponsored by the bidding committee here today. Wu, also the chairperson of the bidding committee, said that China is the largest developing country in the world, and it is the responsibility of the Chinese people to help solve the problems affecting people's survival and development, and to promote peace and development in the world.

"Therefore, by supporting Shanghai's bid for World Expo 2010, the Chinese government hopes to work with people from all over the world to conduct further discussions and research on these problems," Wu added. "We are confident that Shanghai, as China's largest economic center and one of the world's largest cities, will surely host a successful World Expo in 2010," she noted.

Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi told the briefing that the World Expo Shanghai intends to host is the universal World Expo held every five years, and Shanghai intends to hold it in the Pudong New Area from June 1 to October 31, 2010.

An area of land about 10 kilometers from the Pudong International Airport has been reserved for the exposition, he added.

"We hope to display the great efforts of people from various countries in providing high-quality life for urban residents during the exposition," he said. "Therefore, our theme will focus on the city, the environment, and the quality of life."

The World Exposition, which comprehensively reflects the development and achievements of different countries in the fields of politics, economy, culture, as well as science and technology, is known as the "Olympic Games of Economy, Science and Technology, and Culture" for its large scale and far-reaching influence.

China has participated in nine World Expositions since 1982. Last year, China successfully held the World Horticultural Exposition in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, the first time China hosted an A-1 class specialized world exposition recognized by the Bureau of International Exhibitions, the administrative body of the World Exposition.
