Forest Fire Spreading in Northern China

A fire that broke out Sunday at a state-owned forest in the city of Gujiao in north China's Shanxi Province is spreading despite efforts to control it, according to eye-witnesses.

They said that by Monday afternoon, a huge fire was still burning at several spots in the forest fanned by strong winds, threatening to spread to a nearby forest.

Some 1,500 local workers and farmers along with 150 firefighters have been doing their best to contain the blaze but have been hampered by gale-force winds.

Witnesses say damage will be much worse if the fire spreads to the nearby forest.

The fire was caused by four migrant workers who were smoking on the mountain, and two of them have been detained, local officials said.
