Passenger Ship Hits Rocks on Yangtze River

A Chinese passenger ship sailed into rock-studded waters early Monday morning on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, but no deaths or injuries were reported among the 370 passengers and 66 crew members.

According to the Ministry of Communications in Beijing, the Oriental Prince cruise ship sailed into a rocky area at 2 a.m. while en route from Chongqing, one of China's four municipalities, to Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu province.

The Maritime Rescue Center under the ministry immediately dispatched a rescue ship to the spot, and sent another passenger ship, the Oriental Star, to go to the scene, according to orders directly from the Minister of Communications Huang Zhendong.

By 9:30 a.m., all passengers and crew had been transferred to the Oriental Star.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to the ministry.
