Shenyang Awarded for Improved Environment

Shenyang, a heavy industrial base in northeast China which was once a heavily polluted city, was recently given an international award for cleaning up its urban environment.

The award, launched by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), aims to praise cities which have implemented creative measures to improve their environment and become a model for other cities around the world.

Shenyang has succeeded in changing its polluted image in 1998 by no longer being one of the top ten most heavily polluted cities in the world.

The capital city of Liaoning Province has actively cooperated with the United Nations Development Program (UNEP) to start sustainable development programs.

Shenyang is currently considering a cooperation with Beijing- based Qinghua University to introduce nuclear energy for the city' s heating system.
