Nanhai Encourages High-tech Industry

Nanhai, a city in the prosperous region of the Pearl River Delta in South China's Guangdong Province, is gearing up to develop its high and new technology industry, as is reported.

To this end, the city recently held a three-day seminar in a bid to secure inputs of both capital and high and new technologies.

The city has 119 projects for potential investment. They primarily involve the information technology, electronics, metallurgy, machinery, chemical industry, textile and light industries, and building material industry.

Some 60 projects found investors during the fair, involving a total investment of 5.5 billion yuan (US$662.65 million).

"We organize such a seminar aiming to bring in the world's latest developed technologies to step up the development of our high and new technology industry. We also want to take advantage of these technologies to upgrade the city's traditional industries," said Chen Zhongyuan, mayor of the city, at the opening ceremony.

He said the seminar was also an inseparable part of Nanhai's strategy to spearhead other cities in the Pearl River Delta region to set up a high and new technology industry belt in the near future.

Besides the investment, the mayor said, Nanhai is equally interested in forging extensive and close co-operative ties with domestic universities and research institutions.
