China to Clean up Cosmetic IndustryThe State Administration of Internal Trade and the Ministry of Health decided recently to carry out a full-scale rectification of the country's cosmetic industry.Official statistics show that consumer complains against beauty salons have been rising in recent years, as more and more people are concerned about the beauty salons' fake advertisements, poor equipment, and unsafe plastic surgery. China now has more than 1.2 million beauty salons and shops employing more than six million people, and the sector's business turnover hits some 24 billion yuan (US$ 2.9 billion) a year. Yet the lack of standards and a supervisory system has left the industry somewhat troubled, in spite of its huge development in recent years. Sources from the State Administration of Internal Trade and the Ministry of Health said that compulsory regulations will soon standardize the industry's operations and advertising, and beauty salons and staff will be required to obtain certificates to be issued by related departments. |
