Hundred-odd Journalists Go Reporting in the West

More than 140 journalists from over 80 news agencies and units will go to 12 provinces in the west for investigation and reports. They attended the initiating ceremony held on May 13 in Beijing.

Reporters who will go to Inner Mongalia, Shaanxi, Qinghai expressed their wishes that they will, grasping this golden opportunity, devote themselves to the work with great enthusiasm and down-to-earth working attitude in order to fulfill their task in the west, thereby tempering themselves for an enhancement in the work.

Shao Huaze, Chairman of All-China Journalists Association said at the ceremony, to implement development in the west is a decision of great significance facing the new century, a strategic adjustment in China's economic structure. It is conducted under the leadership of the Communist Party with Jiang Zemin at the core and in line with the strategic conception for China's modernization construction put forward by Deng Xiaoping. It proves to be an objective need for expediting the development of regional economy, for expanding domestic demands and for a continuous, speedy and healthy development of the national economy. It is also of important significance for enhancing the national unity, social stability and safety in frontier areas as well as a necessary task for a common prosperity by reducing gaps between various regions,

With the blazing torch taken over by Fan Zeshun from the hands of Chairman Shao, Zheng Mengxiong, vice chairman of the All-China Journalists Association, Yuan Zhifa, associate editor in chief of People's Daily, Zhai Huisheng, deputy editor of Guangming Daily, Zhang Xinxin, deputy editor of China News Agency also handed flags inscribed with "hundred Journalists to the West" into the hands of various groups of journalists.
