Huge Contrast in Housing Prices Among Chinese Cities

Latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics show that average prices of housing in different provinces and municipalities ranged from 779 to 4,086 yuan per square meter in the first quarter this year. In the first three months, the average price of housing in China stood at 1,913 yuan per square meter. Beijing topped the country with 4,086 yuan per sq. m, while central China's Hunan Province had the cheapest housing with an average cost of 779 yuan per sq. m.

Apart from Beijing, Shanghai is the only place where housing is sold at more than 3,000 yuan per square meter. In southwest China' s Chongqing Municipality, east China's Anhui Province, north China 's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and central China's Hunan Province, housing is less than 1,000 yuan per sq. m.

The Ministry of Construction has given pricing suggestion on housing sales in urban areas. It categorized Chinese cities into four groups, each of which has three price levels.

Housing prices per sq. m in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen cities could reach as high as 10,000 yuan, even higher than the average annual income of ordinary Chinese citizens. Low housing prices are set between 1,500 yuan and 2,500 yuan, while medium housing prices are above 4,000 yuan.

The second group consists of major cities and municipalities as well as tourist resorts such as Tianjin and Chongqing Municipalities, Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, and the port cities of Dalian and Qingdao.

Prices in these cities ranges from 6,000 to 8,000 yuan, while the lowest prices are between 1,200 and 2,000 yuan. The third group, mainly big cities in the central and western China, have the most expensive price of between 5,000 to 7,000. Small and medium-sized cities have the cheapest housing between 800 to 1,200 yuan, and the most expensive housing at 4,000 yuan.
