Zhu Rongji Urges for Efforts to Curb Desertification
He made the call yesterday during an inspection tour in North China's Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region . Since early spring, 12 sandstorms have swept much of northern and northwestern China. Beginning last Friday, the premier, accompanied by top local officials, visited areas in Hebei and Inner Mongolia where desertification is very serious. Zhu said that one reason for the frequent sandstorms which hit northern China this spring was abnormal weather, but excessive logging as well as massive reclamation and mining were the real culprits. Over-grazing by cattle and sheep is also a major cause of desertification, he noted, urging efficient protection and supervision of the grasslands. He disclosed that the central government will increase financial support to Hebei and Inner Mongolia for their efforts to combat water and soil erosion and for the creation of new forests. He called on local governments and the residents to work for a better environment for the benefit of the country and its younger generations.
