Li Ruihuan Ends Official Visit of Friendship to Canada

Li Ruihuan, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) left Canada for Venezuela Sunday morning after wrapping up a six-day official visit of friendship to Canada.

eeing him off at the Vancouver International Airport were Raymond Chan, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) of Canada, local Canadian officials and Chinese Canadians.

Chinese Ambassador to Canada Mei Ping and Chinese Consul General to Vancouver Song Youming were among officials making their farewells to the CPPCC National Committee chairman at the airport.

During his visit, Li Ruihuan paid an official call to Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson. He also met Speaker of the Senate Gidas Molgat, Speaker of the House of Commons Gilbert Parent and Prime Minister Jean Chretien on separate occasions. Both Chinese and Canadian officials expressed satisfaction with the first ever visit by a CPPCC National Committee chairman to the North American country.

Canadian officials praised Li Ruihuan's visit as complete success. Li Ruihuan said he is pleased to see the visit has reached its goal of improving mutual understanding, enhancing friendship, expanding common ground and promoting cooperation. Both sides are convinced that the two countries will see even better ties with all-round development of cooperation and, especially, with frequent exchange of visits at top level. Li Ruihuan arrived in Ottawa Monday at the invitation of the Canadian government. He then visited the country's largest city Toronto before touring the coastal city of Vancouver in the west. Li's four-nation trip of America is carrying him to Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago and Peru.
