HK Chief: Obuchi Remembered for Promoting Sino-Japanese Friendship
Former Japanese Prime Minister, Keizo Obuchi, who died Sunday, would be remembered for his efforts in promoting friendship between the Chinese and Japanese peoples, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa said Sunday.
"I am greatly saddened to learn of the untimely death of former Prime Minister Obuchi," Tung said in a statement. Tung praised Obuchi for his "very valuable leadership in fostering closer economic and social ties between Japan and Hong Kong."
"On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to Mrs. Obuchi and members of the family," he said.
Obuchi, who had been in a coma for six weeks after suffering a stroke, died of a cerebral infarction at a Tokyo hospital. He was 62.
