Russian President Divides Country Into 7 Federal Districts

Russian President Vladimir Putin Saturday signed a decree to divide the Russian Federation into

seven federal districts.

Under the order, each of the districts will incorporate several existing republics, territories and regions, and Kremlin representatives will be appointed for these seven parts of Russia.

The districts to be created are following:

-- The Central Federal District (capital Moscow);

-- The North-West Federal District (capital St. Petersburg);

-- The North Caucasus Federal District (capital Rostov-on-Don);

-- The Volga Federal District (capital Nizhny Novgorod);

-- The Ural Federal District (capital Yekaterinburg);

-- The Siberian Federal District (capital Novosibirsk);

-- The Far Eastern Federal Districts (capital Khabarovsk).

The purpose of the reorganization of administrative areas is "to ensure the exercise by the president of the Russian Federation of his constitutional powers, to raise the effectiveness of the

activity of federal bodies of government and to improve the system of control of the implementation of their decisions," said Putin's

press service.
