US House Committee to Vote on China Bill on May 17

The Ways and Means Committee of U. S. House of Representatives has set May 17 to vote on legislation granting permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) to China, Committee Chairman Bill Archer announced Friday in Washington.

"Winning the China vote will not be easy, but if we reject the few special interests, we can get this done this year," Archer, a Texas Republican, said in a statement.

A Reuters' poll said 20 of the 39-member committee would vote in favor of the trade bill while another four members were also likely to support it.

The bill, if passed by the committee, will move to the 435- member House for a vote in the week of May 22.

The Senate Finance Committee has decided to vote on the trade bill Wednesday, and the full Senate will follow suit in early June.
