Senior CPC Official Meets WCL Delegation

Wei Jianxing, a standing committee member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with a delegation of the World Confederation of Labor (WCL) headed by its general secretary Willy Thys, Friday in Beijing.

Wei, who is also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, extended a warm welcome to the delegation and gave a brief account of the tremendous achievements China made in its 20 years of reforms.

Wei said under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Jiang Zemin at the core, China has taken a series of measures to overcome the effects and difficulties inflicted by the Asian financial crisis, and registered a relatively rapid growth in its national economy. The reform of the State-owned enterprises, in particular, has recorded major progress. People's life quality has been constantly upgraded and social stability has been maintained, he said.

Wei also briefed the delegation on the situation of China's trade unions, stressing the Chinese trade unions are willing to develop cooperation with the WCL and trade unions around the world based on the principle of independence, equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

William Thys said during the current visit, the delegation has learned that Chinese trade unions serve to protect the rights and interests of ordinary laborers. Amidst economic globalization, trade unions around the world should respect each other and tighten cooperation. And workers of all countries should unite, he said.

He also expressed the hope that contacts between the WCL and Chinese trade unions would be reinforced. The delegation is visiting China at the invitation of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
