Beijing Mayor Meets Australian Guests

Liu Qi, mayor of Beijing, said Friday that Beijing welcomes overseas investment in the field of environmental protection.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage Robert Hill and his party. Liu briefed the guests on the local economic situation and environment protection.

He told the guests that the Beijing government mapped out a five-year plan in 1998, according to which the city will invest 46 billion yuan to tackle environmental pollution.

The government will support overseas enterprises to invest in this field in Beijing, Liu noted.

Hill said that the Australian government and enterprises are willing to cooperate with Beijing in environmental protection. The Australian guests are at the invitation of the State Bureau of Environmental Protection.
