Ericsson Sets up New Joint Venture in China

Sweden-based Ericsson Friday announced a new joint venture with the Heilongjiang Mobile Communications Co.

The new business, Heilongjiang Ericsson Technology Company Ltd, is Ericsson's ninth joint venture in China.

The company will be engaged in engineering services, technical services, and software development, according to a contract signed by the two sides.

Business will be carried out in the fields of project engineering design and implementation and network optimization, after-sale services, software upgrading, technical support, software design and testing, and technical training and development.

Li Xiangping, executive vice-president of Ericsson (China), said the company will continue its technology transfer as an integral part of its localization strategy for joint ventures.

Cooperation between Ericsson and HMCC started in 1993. In addition to this joint venture, the two parties Friday clinched a GSM system expansion deal valued at 90 million US dollars.

China has witnessed rapid development in the mobile telecommunication industry in recent years, and by the end of 1999, the country had 40 million mobile phone users. This figure is expected to reach 100 million by 2003, and 150 million by 2005.
