Wahid Suggests Direct Flights to China

Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has suggested opening up direct air links between Indonesia and China to attract more tourists and enhance the two countries' economic relationship, a local newspaper in Jakarta said Friday.

The Indonesian Observer daily quoted Chairman of the Association of Indonesia-China Economic, Social and Cultural Cooperation Sukamdani Sahid Gitosardjono as saying the president suggested opening flight routes from Batam (Indonesia's tourists destination island) and Jakarta to Shanghai and Beijing.

"The main target is to attract more tourists from China to come to Indonesia," Gitosardjono said.

With the opening of the routes people from Indonesia would not need to go to Singapore en route to China, he said, adding trade and industrial relationships between the two countries have been running well.

"That is why the prime target of the suggestion is to enhance cooperation in the tourism sector," he said, citing Chinese-Indonesian's role in the country's economic growth.

He further revealed that a delegation from China is due to come to Indonesia by next month. "They are expected to take a keen interest in investing in Indonesia."
