Favorable Environment Urged for Children

China called for taking effective measures to create a favorable environment for the healthy growth of children, just weeks before the June 1 International Children's Day.

A joint circular issue by the All-China Women's Federation, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Central Committee of Communist Youth League of China, the Ministry of Education and other departments urged that joint efforts be made to care for the children, especially to promote their education.

This year's celebration activities should focus on facing challenges in the new century with a nationwide education campaign promoting patriotism, morality, discipline and law. Education departments should guide students to take part in more extracurricular activities and relieve their pressure at school and home.

More suitable films and TV serials should be available for children. Museums, technology exhibition halls and parks should open to children at a discount and for longer time.

Supervision departments are asked to check public entertainment facilities, children's food and toys to ensure safety.

The "Youngsters Return Home Safely" Project launched in early April by the Ministry of Public Security should be further carried out nationwide.

Since a high school student in east China's Zhejiang Province killed his mother in February because of increasing school pressure, the country has repeatedly questioned its old education system and made efforts to improve the current situation.
