One-China Principle Ensures Taiwan Compatriots' Fundamental InterestThe May Issue of the "Cross-Straits Relations" magazine publishes a signed article making it clear that only if the two sides of the Taiwan Straits jointly adhere to the One-China Principle, can cross-straits ties enjoy stability and a peaceful future. For decades, people in China's mainland and Taiwan have lived under different political systems, and thus held different views on some political issues, but it has never blocked Chinese compatriots living on the two sides of the straits from sharing a common goal of pursuing reunification and the One-China Principle. The article accuses Lee Teng-hui for advocating "Taiwan independence" and attempting to split the Chinese people living on the two sides. Lee's activities are detrimental to the fundamental interests of the Taiwan compatriots and may even destroy the future of Taiwan, it says. It also accuses some political figures in Taiwan for refusing to recognize the fact that Taiwan is part of China, urging the new leader of Taiwan to officially recognize the One-China Principle and that Taiwan is part of China, so as to prevent "Taiwan independence". The article urges the new leader of Taiwan not to take the road of Lee Teng-hui who has marred the cross-straits relations. If the new leader recognizes the One-China Principle, the two sides can restore mutual political trust and further strengthen cross-straits economic cooperation, and finally end hostility through negotiations, it says. Over the past two decades, the mainland has adopted a practical attitude toward the One-China Principle, but some people in Taiwan are doing all they can to undermine the sincerity of the mainland in realizing reunification. |
