China Marks Fifth Anniversary of World Women's ConferenceAbout 2,000 Chinese and foreign women attended a meeting in Beijing on May 11 to mark the fifth anniversary of the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW).The United Nations held the conference, the largest of its kind, in Beijing in 1995. The Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action were passed at that time to promote the development of women throughout the world. China, along with other countries, has been trying to put the spirit of the FWCW into practice and realize equality between men and women during the past five years, said Wu Yi, State Councilor and alternate member of the Political Bureau of Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. In the past five years, China has scored outstanding achievements in women's issues through implementing the Program for the Development of Chinese Women (1995-2000), and the development of Chinese women has entered its best period ever. More women are involved in the government's management and decision-making, and have been trusted with more administrative power. Women are receiving greater resources and more job opportunities than ever before, and the education discrepancy between men and women has been narrowed. Both the education and health levels of women have improved, and more women have escaped poverty, she said, while laws and regulations on the protection of women and children have also been improved. Officials from the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, as well as foreign envoys to China also attended the meeting. |
