U.S. Customs Official Praises Cooperation With HK
Raymond Kelly, commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service, on Friday praised joint efforts between U.S and Hong Kong Customs to address a range of mutual enforcement concerns.
"The progress made in combating transnational crime has been impressive," said Kelly at the end of his three-day visit to Hong Kong.
Kelly's trip was highlighted by a series of briefings with the Hong Kong Commissioner of Customs and Excise, John Tsang Chun-wah, and senior members of his staff.
"Under Commissioner Tsang's leadership, the Hong Kong Customs has taken aggressive and effective steps to curb illegal activities that pose a threat to consumers and the legitimate flow of trade we strive to defend every day." Kelly said.
Kelly also noted the outstanding efforts of his counterparts in Hong Kong to curb intellectual property rights piracy and the manufacturing of counterfeit goods.
"I am glad to observe that this illicit trade is now declining and many shops previously notorious for selling pirated or counterfeit goods have been shut down," he said.
He also praised joint efforts by Hong Kong and U.S Customs to stop illegal textile transshipment to the United States, pointing to a number of successful cooperative investigations.
Kelly expressed his desire that these positive trends would continue and cooperation between the two agencies would become even closer.
