Tianjin to Invest One Billion Yuan in Garbage Disposal

North China's Tianjin Municipality plans to invest one billion yuan in building garbage disposal centers in the next five years to improve its garbage treatment system.

With the investment, four large-scale modern garbage disposal plants will be built and another five existing plants will be technologically upgraded. These plants will be able to dispose of more than 80 percent of the city's garbage, according to an official in charge of environment protection and sanitation work in Tianjin.

The city has increased investment in that regard since 1999, with 250 million yuan already earmarked for the garbage disposal purpose.

Accelerated expansion of the urban area in the 1990s in Tianjin, which has a population of more than nine million, has put enormous pressure on disposing garbage. The city discharges garbage totaling 5,500 tons daily, and the rate is increasing by four percent annually.

Compared with the mounting garbage output, the city's garbage disposal system still remains poor.

The city has built a garbage tip at a cost of 120 million yuan, which is designed to treat 2,700 tons of garbage daily, about one half of the daily garbage volume in Tianjin.

Meanwhile, the city plans to finish a special garbage disposal plant by the end of this year. Another large garbage tip and a garbage incineration and power-generating plant are also being planned.
