Hong Kong People Have Stronger National Awareness
According to a recent survey conducted in the Hong Kong SAR, in the past three years since Hong Kong's return, there has emerged a tendency that Hong Kong residents have a stronger awareness of their identity of being Chinese while their awareness of their identity of being Hong Kongers is weakening, this shows a gradual rise in the residents' awareness of their identity of being Chinese.
This biannual survey, conducted among 777 persons, divided the government's administrative program into eight respects: housing, education, welfare, economy, the relation between China's inland and Hong Kong, and between Hong Kong and Taiwan, freedom of speech and of assembly and development of political democracy.
In the recognition of their identity, 52.9 percent of the people surveyed indicated that they are Hong Kong people rather than being Chinese, and 37.3 percent gave just the opposite view, this marks a notable reduction in recognition of their identity of Kong Kongers compared to the last survey.
According to the investigatory department, this should be attributed to the political reality of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the effect of intensified education of Hong Kong residents concerning their identity of being Chinese citizens.
In addition, 44 percent of the Hong Kong residents think that the "One China, Two System" policy has been put into practice in the Hong Kong SAR and 30 percent of those surveyed believed that the experience gained in implementation of this policy has positive influence on the reunification of Taiwan and the mainland.
