Chinese Southernmost Great Wall Found in Hunan Province

The Great Wall has always been regarded as a defense line used by people in the Central Plains to resist the northern nomadic tribes. However, a section of the Great Wall rarely seen in historical records was recently found in the Fenghuang County of south China's Hunan Province.

Experts have approved that this 190 km-long section of the Great Wall was built around the years of 1573-1620 in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It starts north from Xiqueying of Guzhang County in western Hunan Province and south to Huanghuiying of Tongren City in Guizhou Province, the greater part of this section runs through Fenghuang County.

This Great Wall section is three meters high, two meters wide at the bottom and one meter wide at its top. With its major part built on ridges, the Great Wall has over 800 batteries, watchtowers and gates of the pass.
