Chinese Leader Arrives in Toronto to Continue Canada Visit

Li Ruihuan, visiting Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), arrived Toronto Wednesday to continue his official goodwill visit to Canada.

Li and his entourage were met at the airport by Canadian Minister of Transport David Collenette and local government officials.

Following the arrival, Premier of Ontario Province Michael Harris gave a grand banquet in honor of Li, wishing further improvement of ties between the two countries. Earlier in the day, Li visited the Canadian Museum of Civilization and Northern Telecom (Nortel) facilities at Carling Avenue in Ottawa.

Li expressed appreciation of Nortel's high-tech development in recent years and its decision to conduct cooperation with China as early as in 1972.

He urged Nortel to do more in technology transfer and achieve greater success in its development in China.

Canadian Senate Speaker Gidas Molgat held a farewell meeting with Li before his departure for Toronto.

Li arrived in Ottawa Monday to begin his six-day visit to Canada.
