China Likely to Become Largest Mobile Internet Market: Ericsson President

China is likely to become one of the largest mobile Internet markets in the world in the next few years, said Kurt Hellstrom, President of Ericsson.

In a speech addressed to students at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications Wednesday, the president said that by 2004, mobile phone users in China will increase to 250 million from the present 55 million.

"Internet is now in its initial stage in China, but as mobile telecom operators converge the mobile telecommunication with Internet, they can provide Internet services anywhere and anytime, " Hellstrom said.

Ericsson China Wednesday signed a framework agreement with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications to expand cooperation in the development of telecom, IP and mobile Internet markets in the next five years.

Hellstrom noted that by 2002, the world will have one billion mobile phone users and by 2003, the number of mobile Internet users will exceed that of fixed Internet users.

Ericsson is working closely to cooperate with Chinese counterparts to promote the development of telecommunication in China.

China should invest more in research and development in the sector, he suggested.

Ericsson (China) and the China Academy of Telecommunications Technology (CATT) attached to the Ministry of Information Industry Wednesday set up the WCDMA Research and Development Center in Beijing.
