Premier Zhu Meets Vietnamese Deputy PM

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Wednesday hailed the Land Border Treaty between China and Vietnam, signed by both foreign ministers on December 30 last year, as a great event in bilateral relations.

During his meeting with visiting Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Manh Cam, Zhu expressed the hope that both sides will as quickly as possible change documents so as to start demarcation work at an earlier date, now that China's National People's Congress Standing Committee already ratified the treaty in April.

China and Vietnam will devote themselves to resolving the demarcation of Beibu Bay, Zhu said, adding that it will be another major event in bilateral relations following the settlement of the land border issue. Zhu added his belief that demarcation work will be accomplished on the basis of mutual understanding and mutual accommodation.

During the meeting, Zhu said that Sino-Vietnamese relations have made progress this year and that both countries have celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral ties.

Nguyen Manh Cam, who is attending the 11th Annual Corporate Conference of the U.S. Asia Society, replied that Vietnam is satisfied with the rapid development of bilateral relations, adding that trade and economic cooperation between the two countries have witnessed new developments following Zhu's visit to Vietnam last year.

He voiced the belief that the Land Border Treaty will be passed without any difficulty in the National Assembly of Vietnam.
