Chinese Leader Meets Canadian Speaker of House of Commons

Li Ruihuan, visiting Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held a friendly meeting with Gilbert Parent, Canadian Speaker of House of Commons, Tuesday.

Li conveyed to Parent cordial greeting from Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC)

Li said China and Canada have seen years of sustained development of friendly ties, despite the fact that the two countries are far away from each other.

With increased exchanges of visits by leaders of both countries, cooperation has been expanded to nearly all fields since 1970, when the two countries established diplomatic relations, he said. Li spoke highly of the contribution by Parent as Speaker of House of Commons to the improved Sino-Canadian relations over the past years.

China and Canada enjoy many common points and are complementary where Canada is one of the important developed nations and China is the largest developing country in the world, Li pointed out.

He said mutual benefits and cooperation are in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, noting that China sees broader prospects for bilateral ties.

Parent expressed warm welcome to the first visit by Li Ruihuan as CPPCC National Committee Chairman, wishing him all success in his goodwill mission.

He also expressed satisfaction with the smooth and healthy progress in the relations between the two countries in justice, economy and trade, culture and science and technology.

He hoped that the two countries would have more exchanges of visits by senior officials to further friendly ties.
