China Kills Forest Fire in Northwest

China has put out a forest fire raging along its border with the Republic of Mongolia since last Wednesday, forest fire authorities confirmed on May 9.

By 6 p.m. on Monday, the fire was also blocked from the forests and grasslands of Inner Mongolia, which borders the Republic of Mongolia, a State Forestry Administration spokesman announced.

To stop the fire from re-entering China, over 3,500 frontier forces and fire police equipped with four airplanes were mobilized to hold up the approaching fire lines, he said.

The official attributed the fire-fighting success to the central government's support, co-operation among local agencies and the effect of 2,800 kilometers of fire breaks built along the border since 1996.

To prevent forest fires from crossing China's borders with its northeastern neighbors, since 1994 the government has earmarked 5 million yuan (US$602,000) to 10 million yuan (US$1.2 million) a year to develop these belts.
