Optical Electronics Base in Central China

Wuhan, capital city of Hubei Province in central China, has announced an ambitious plan to build China's largest optical electronics information base.

The mayor of Wuhan, Wang Shouhai, said that within five years the city will try to raise the output value of what will be known as "optics of China" to almost 120 billion yuan (about US$ 14 billion).

Wuhan has already started preparations in technology, capital and projects. The city has selected 14 large projects in the next five years.

Efforts have begun to solicit both domestic and overseas investment in the base, he said.

The local government is making its utmost to create an entrepreneurial environment akin to Silicon Valley in the U.S., including the establishment of new systems in intellectual property protection, risk investment, stock options and other sectors.

This project has long been envisioned by many Chinese scientists. Recently, 26 academicians from the he China Academy of Sciences and the China Academy of Engineering submitted suggestions to the central government to accelerate the project. Zhao Zisen, an academician with the China Academy of Engineering, said with the development of an information-oriented economy, China is about to enter a stage of fast development in the optical electronics information industry.
