Satellite Helps Find 28,000 Historic SitesChinese archaeologists said in Beijing on May 9 at the Forum on Satellite Application that they had used satellite remote sensing technology to search for and find many historic ruins.This so-called "space archaeology" has helped Chinese archaeologists find 28,087 historic sites at the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, said Liu Shuren, a professor at a Shanghai- based remote sensing lab. These historic sites date back from the Neolithic Age to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-- 476 BC), showing that the Yangtze River basin was also the birthplace of Chinese civilization, Liu said. Some 40,000 ruins are expected to be discovered in the area thanks to satellite remote sensing technology. "Over 95 percent of the satellite archaeological findings have been confirmed," he said. |
